Boxing Knockouts
+ Shadow Boxing
Shadow boxing is an essential part to any boxers workout routine. It consists of fighting an imaginary opponent, or a shadow. This obviously takes some imagination, but in doing this, boxers can practice their combinations and footwork.
To shadow box, you must first know basic footwork and combinations. Once you have those down, you can shadow box. Boxers usually shadow box with only hand wraps on (no gloves). They also shadow box for a set amount of time, usually determined by rounds. In college, rounds are 2 minutes long, with 1:30 minutes breaks in between. And, unlike the pros, there are only 3 rounds in collegiate boxing. Because of this, college boxing is high intensity, so boxers must be in great shape and have outstanding endurance.
Because college boxing is only 3 rounds, boxers usually shadow box more than just 3 rounds to help with endurance.
Shadow boxing is also done at the beginning of a training session to warm up, and sometimes after to cool down.
Many times, boxers will shadowbox with weights, in order to make their punches quicker. Weighted gloves can also be used to improve quickness.
