Working the heavy bag is a very important part of a boxers routine. It is a way to speed up your punches and improve arm strength. Working the heavy bag is also great for improving endurance. You should use the heavy bag to practice combinations.

Also, you should wear gloves when working the heavy bag. You should especially use heavier gloves then you normally would in a bout to increase hand speed even more.

Another thing that is important to remember in using the heavy bag is to always keep rotating around the heavy bag, just like you would around an opponent to avoid punches.
